Frenemy fiasco

I have booked my wedding for 5th September 2009. A friend (which I consider a very good friend) got engaged two weeks after me and is now looking for venues so she can book her big day next year too. However, she announced last week that she is going to book her wedding on the bank holiday weekend, which is exactly one week before mine. She also wants to do a lot of things similar to me, one being a BBQ and the other a similar venue. We have ten of the same guests going to our weddings. I can’t believe she wants to book so close to mine and I told her this and we have now had a massive row. She can’t understand why I’m upset, the bottom line is that I feel like she is stealing my thunder. Is there anything I can do?

Tanya, via email

Anthony says: "Tanya I feel like you’re asking me this to see if I want to join in the witch hunt and the answer, my friend, is yes! Seriously though, this frenemy is overstepping the mark. I totally understand how you would be very upset by her actions and inconsideration...other than doing rain dances to ensure her big day is swamped, I don’t really know what else you can do. I am assuming that you have taken the tactful, gentle approach already? If not then perhaps you should think about what you really want to say and send it in a letter. Good luck honey, hope it all works out!"

Best woman?

My partner has chosen to have his best friend as his best man, which is great, apart from the fact she is a woman and I’m having trouble trying to dress her. She is adamant she is not wearing a dress, but does not want to look like a geezer bird. Please help as I’m out of ideas!

Lucy, Herts

Anthony says: "What’s her suggestion, birthday suit and a big smile? I would suggest kilts! They are androgynous and there are some really funky ones available. Try 21st Century Kilts in Edinburgh or Guilty Kilts in Carnaby Square, London – you can have pretty much any colour or design you want and they are actually quite flattering too!"

Orchard wedding

My fiancé and I are wanting to get married next June in the orchard at my home. I don’t know how to find someone to marry us there or even if it’s legal to do so.

Susie, via email

Richard says: "The law does not allow outdoor weddings. Many hotels use a fixed pergola, and these have to be concreted into the ground to be considered a permanent structure. A registrar is then the only officiate that is able to perform the full legal wedding. However, you can have a humanist ceremony in the garden, having already had the legal element earlier in the day and this can often be very beautiful and personal"

Finding fairylights

I’m desperate to have my wedding reception, which is in a barn, decorated with fairylights. The hotel will only allow this if they are installed and collected by a professional company. Help!

Rachael, via email

Richard says: "Even though this would look beautiful, you could try a star cloth instead, which is more easily installed and should work out to be a cheaper option. Take a look at innovation-productions.com – they should be able to help you find something suitable."
