Not-so-sweet sister

I can’t bear my sister-in-law-to-be and am ridiculously scared about her ruining my big day. She’s jealous and manipulative and would love to be me, getting married. How can I avoid her and avoid being bothered by her on my big day?

Julie, Swansea

Well my darling, my instant response would be to sell her for two camels and a pair of Jimmy Choos! But seriously, I would suggest putting her on a table far away from you and the top table, make sure that your chief bridesmaid or closest friend on the day is aware of the situation and ask them to be your buffer, so that every time she comes near you, they keep her away! This is your big day and she should respect that.

Pesky pollen

My husband has a dreadful pollen allergy. Is there any such thing as nice silk flowers? I am so worried about him having a sneezing fit!

Claire, Stevenage

You don’t necessarily need flowers – by using twigs, shells and stones you can still get a dramatic effect, especially in your centrepieces.

A tall problem?

I am slightly taller than my husband in my gorgeous Gina shoes, which I saved up for over a year to buy. Does this matter? I don’t want to give them back!

Donna, Kent

First of all, sweetie, yes it does! Size alwaaays matters! Nevertheless, you have saved for these shoes and have probably dreamt of skipping up the aisle in them, so our immediate response is go for it darling. What matters is that you are comfortable and if the shoes are an important part of your desired big day look then you should wear them.

Planning pressure

Help! I am so stressed with all the wedding planning that I am seriously considering getting married abroad! Do you really think hiring a planner will help?

Jo, London

OF COURSE! Hiring a wedding planner should definitely ease the stress, but there are a few things to consider. They should be excited about your big day, you pay them to listen and they should always be available to you. They should also be able to pass on discounts, therefore the fee you pay them is often lost within this. Last but not least, they should be near you! There’s no point hiring someone you can’t just drop in on! Going abroad will potentially throw up more problems, unless you hire a local planner too. Bite the bullet and do it – planners are so worth it!

Flowergirl fuss

I have been asked to have my cousin’s daughter as my flowergirl, but I really don’t want her because she’s likely to kick up a fuss and start crying. I don’t want my day ruined, but equally I don’t want to upset my cousin. What can I do?

Nikki, Edinburgh

Oh dear, this is a difficult one, but our suggestion is this – rather than have her as a flowergirl, have her as a special wedding fairy, let her parents buy her a cute fairy dressing-up ensemble and give her a little box of magic fairy dust (confetti) so she can throw confetti over you as you leave the church. This way she stays with the parents throughout the service, but she still has some fun.

Grooming the groom

My groom is really good looking but he never really takes time to make himself look amazing, and I know he can be. Can you recommend any male grooming products I can buy him, or any pampering sessions that may help?

Sally, Bristol

If you want to buy him some products, Clarins for Men and Clinique for Men have some very butch-looking items, such as Clinique’s Scruffing Lotion. It sounds manly, but it’s just cleanser, and he will never know. Think about getting him to go to a barber for an old-fashioned shave too. This will get him to think about grooming a bit more.

Venue nightmare

I have fallen in love with an old country house, but the carpet is disgusting! Patterned, dark red – just horrible, especially as my colour scheme is ivory and green.

Lucy, Colchester

Ask them to make sure it is cleaned beforehand. Also ask to see the room when it’s dressed for another wedding, then you can see how much the carpet still distracts. But on the big day it will be your lovely tables, and of course you, that people will be looking at and not the carpet.

Boozy boys?

My husband’s friends are all really hard drinkers and I’m afraid that they will get drunk and ruin the reception, and worse of all, get my husband drunk so we won’t be able to enjoy our wedding night!

Natalie, London

Limit the free drink to beer and wine only – this can help curb the big drinkers. If you don’t want people consuming spirits or cocktails, ask the venue not to supply them. Also ask wives and girlfriends to keep an eye on their guys.
