How you've solved your...Planning problems

  • My fiancé and I thought we had found the perfect venue. It was a place I had loved as a child and I always wanted to get married there, and when I brought my h2b there for the first time, he fell in love with it. But then we started looking closer into it, and the more we did, the more we didn’t like it. Because the building is quite old they have a lot of rules.
  • We couldn’t have the reception in the room we wanted unless we jeopardised the ceremony, and if we wanted the ceremony and reception in the rooms we wanted they would charge us double, making the total near enough £10,000. I was heartbroken and I felt like my wedding would be ruined as we had our hearts set on that venue, but then we opened our eyes a little wider and started looking around at other venues. We have now found several other places that are just as nice, maybe even nicer, for so much less money, so my advice to all brides-to-be is if something goes wrong and you’re upset, don't worry because it will be sure to all work out for the best! - Brittany aka Princess Bride
  • The biggest problem we’ve encountered when planning our wedding is the venue. We quite fancied getting married abroad to save all the hassle, on my h2b’s fathers cruise ship, but my sister pointed out that her husband gets very badly seasick. We persevered though and with the help of my mum we found the perfect reception venue: a golf club and a reasonably priced marquee to attach on the side. We also found the most wonderful civil ceremony venue which has a grand piano. When I thought about this, it was actually what I had always dreamed my wedding would be; a city wedding on a busy Saturday afternoon amongst the shoppers and a marquee reception. I just never thought it would be within our reach! - Lyndsay aka Nook-sy
  • My biggest problem so far has been booking my hair appointment. There’s only one salon I trust enough to get it right, but they’ve been booked up on all the days I’ve asked them! Now that I’ve finally got a day booked, they’re still being really difficult. I need my appointment for at least 9am to leave me enough time, but they’re trying to make it later. I’m now considering trying a different salon altogether! - Sally-Mae
  • My advice is to speak to other brides-to-be and get advice wherever you can. Go online, look through magazines and hunt down every titbit of information you can. Chances are someone has the answer you’re looking for or even the answer to a question that you haven’t thought of yet! - Suzanne aka Honeysooze
  • We booked our wedding last August. We chose the little Chinese restaurant behind our house to have our wedding breakfast. We paid the deposit, sorted the menu, bought the favours and the table decorations; but the manager phoned back in March to cancel as the landlord was selling up! Obviously we were gutted, but he did return our deposit and doubled it! So I was straight on the phone to my mother-in-law-to-be and she said to leave it to her. I’m glad I did! She’s having everyone back to her house for a couple of hours and is laying on a huge spread for us. She truly saved the day! - Angela Miles aka blondeplanet1
  • I bought my bridemaids’ dresses before my own. I didn’t foresee this being a problem. The bridesmaids’ dresses were perfect for the setting as I’m getting married in Cuba and I knew what I wanted for myself; until I went shopping for my dress and picked something that clashed! So the bridesmaids’ dresses are going back and I’m back to square one! - Vicki aka Bridezilla2006
  • The first problem we faced when planning our wedding was finding a venue that could accommodate our families for the wedding breakfast and evening disco – we’ll be inviting about 200 to both parts of the day. We managed to solve that one fairly easily and are now left with just one problem – my h2b is still legally married to someone else! Before planning the wedding, we took legal advice and were told to allow 4 to 6 months for the divorce. We allowed 18 months to be on the safe side, but 8 months on things still aren’t resolved. We are optimistic that everything will be sorted for our big day though, as we are now taking charge of things ourselves! We have 10 months to go – wish us luck! - Emma
  • We are currently having a mini wedding crisis with our cake. Originally our cake-maker was fantastic and enthusiastic, but now with 12 weeks to go she’s changed her tune and is very unco-operative, to the point where we are now looking for a new cake-maker! - MissyMe
  • I’ve had a difficult time trying to sort out a band for my reception. My friends and family all have such diverse tastes that nothing will please them all! A swing band won’t suit my bridesmaids’ tastes but a disco would not go down well with relatives, especially those who are elderly. I’m not sure how to make everyone happy, so I’ll probably end up not having a band at all! - Fleur
  • I had a lot of trouble trying to track down a good master of ceremonies. I had my heart set on having one, even though my h2b thought it was unnecessary. When it came down to the crunch, I just couldn’t seem to find the right one for the job. In the end I had to compromise by not having a master of ceremonies, but having a brilliant piper instead – something I’d always wanted anyway! - Lucy
  • Our favours have been the most difficult thing to get hold of. We thought we'd left plenty of time to order them, but when the time came to pick them we couldn't find the exact ones we wanted anywhere. We realise now that we should have started this much earlier! With only a month to go until the wedding and no favours as yet, it's getting a little tight – but I'm sure it'll work out in the end! - Freddie
